"Omaggio a Renata"

two events organized to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the passing of the great soprano (2004-2014)

A kaleidoscope of emotions characterized the two events which the Renata Tebaldi Foundation organized in December 2014 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the passing of the great soprano.
On 1st December, an opera concert took place at Teatro Titano.

Deep emotions permeated the whole venue from the foyer, where two precious dresses owned by Tebaldi were on display, to the stalls and the stage where Eve-Maud Hubeaux – the mezzo-soprano who ranked first in the Opera section at the 2013 edition of the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition – opened the evening accompanied on the piano by Raffaele Cortesi and fascinated the audience with her elegance. Carlo Vistoli and Julie Fioretti – who ranked first and second respectively in the Ancient and Baroque Repertoire section at the 2013 edition of the Competition – opened the second part of the event on the notes of Händel, accompanied by Fuoco e Cenere Baroque ensemble conducted by Jay Bernfeld.

"Singing again in San Marino and on such a special occasion is a great honour for me", said Eve-Maud Hubeaux. I have a strong feeling for the Renata Tebaldi Foundation and its Competition because it has been my true springboard to success. It was not only the very first competition I had ever won but the contract I was offered by Serge Dorny, the president of the jury, was the first of a long series of important opportunities. Moreover, tonight I could sing O, mio Fernando, an aria by Donizetti which has a special meaning for me since it was my forte at the Competition but I could not perform it during the final. Having the opportunity to sing it here tonight is really exciting!".

Countertenor Carlo Vistoli was very thrilled too. Actually, a few days after the performance with Julie Fioretti and Fuoco e Cenere quartet, he left for Shanghai to participate in the Baroque Festival. During the evening, the group played some pieces from Giulio Cesare in Egitto by Händel. “It was an honour for me to be here again on this special occasion as this stage has meant so much for my career: after winning the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition, I lived a number of experiences and coming back here today was incredibly moving".

Julie Fioretti, the French soprano who has a deep relationship with Italy, as proved by her surname, agrees: "Being back in San Marino to celebrate Renata Tebaldi is a dream which comes true. San Marino and the Competition are in my heart and I hope I will be able to perform soon again in this theatre, which still makes me feel breathless like the first time when I got in for the very first audition".

Willingness to perform again and emotion fill the words of Jay Bernfeld, the artistic director and bass viol player of Fuoco e Cenere quartet. "I am honoured that the Renata Tebaldi Foundation has chosen us as ambassadors of its Baroque section. We play all over the world but doing it here, in the place where our beloved Tebaldi lived her last years is the top. When I was a young boy, I was so lucky I could listen to her singing in New York and that changed my way of conceiving music completely. The Foundation has boosted and enhanced the value of young talents who, starting from here, will begin successful careers".

A big audience crowded the Basilica of San Marino on 19 December for the performance of the Petite Messe Solennelle by Gioacchino Rossini preceded by a mass in memory of the same day in 2004 when Renata Tebaldi passed away in San Marino, the place she had chosen as her last residence.

M° Riccardo Muti too, along with his wife, Cristina Mazzavillani, was present at the event as a part of a private visit in San Marino. At the end of the concert, maestro Muti spent some time with the officers of the Foundation.

The musical tribute was paid by some of the young performers who ranked in the first places at the finals in the past editions of the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition. The soloists were Anna Kasyan, Romina Tomasoni, Davide Giusti and Kyu Bong Lee conducted by M° Nicola Paszkowski along with the La Stagione Armonica choir.

‎"Singing in San Marino is always a great emotion", commented Korean bass Kyu Bong Lee at the end of the concert. “It is a place where you can breathe freedom and history".
The same feelings permeate the words of young tenor Davide Giusti: "Every time I come to San Marino, I live again my victory at the 2011 edition of the Competition. And tonight, when we saw M° Muti in the audience, so many thoughts crowded all together in my mind and recovering concentration was really difficult! Another great opportunity which the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition has given me by surprise".
Romina Tomasoni agrees with Giusti:
"Besides the emotion of celebrating Tebaldi, I was proud to perform for such an idol of music worldwide".
Even more intimate was the feeling of soprano Anna Kasyan, who held back her emotion with great difficulty so inspired she was by the memory of Renata Tebaldi: "My recollections about the artist and the fascination of this wonderful church have been the foundations on which I played my part".

Just out of curiosity. The flower arrangements were provided by Fior di Verbena, who used Renata Tebaldi’s favourite flowers!
Thanks to Mara Verbena for her research and art.

21 December 2013 - Christmas Concert

in memory of Renata Tebaldi

In memory of Renata Tebaldi, the San Marino Music Institute joined the Renata Tebaldi Foundation in a performance to remember the great soprano, one of the most extraordinary Opera singers of all times, on the occasion of her passing away on 19 December 2004 in San Marino, a city she deeply loved.

The programme of the 2013 Christmas Concert was dedicated to Giuseppe Verdi: a due homage to the father of Italian melodrama in the bicentenary of his birth. The Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of San Marino, conducted by Maestro Valerio Galli, performed some of the most beautiful pages of Verdi’s repertoire: from the symphonies from Nabucco and La Traviata to the arias from Il Trovatore, Falstaff and Don Carlos.

Thanks to the collaboration with the Rebata Tebaldi Foundation, the protagonists of the concert were two singers who were awarded prizes at the latest edition of the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition: the Georgian soprano Marina Nachkebiva and the Korean baritone Kyu Bong Lee.

On the occasion of the 8th anniversary of the death of the great soprano, the Renata Tebaldi Foundation organized a concert that brought on the stage of the Teatro Titano some of the past winners of the Renata Tebaldi International Voice Competition: sopranos Anna Kasyan, Teresa Sedlmair, Jaeeun Lee, mezzo-soprano Romina Tomasoni, tenor Davide Giusti, baritone Filippo Bettoschi and bass Kwang Ho Choi, accompanied on the piano by Elisa Cerri and Davide Cavalli.

“The decision to give the proceeds of our usual concert in memory of Renata Tebaldi to the Fondazione Andreoli comes from a twofold consideration. Support musical education to the youngest, an activity in which this institution has now become a consolidated point of reference and a national and international model, and intervene where the earthquake occurred last spring put a strain on the population and territory. Just as Renata Tebaldi had done with the proceeds of her last concert at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan in 1976 for the victims of the earthquake in Friuli, the Foundation dedicated to the memory of the performer and wanted by her to form the singers and the audience of tomorrow found the Fondazione Andreoli. I take this opportunity to thank all those who have responded to this appeal and, in particular, the San Marino Heart-Life Association for joining us with a generous offer. Our hope for this important school in Emilia Romagna is that it continues its diffusion activity because 'Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable' in the words of Leonard Bernstein”.

During the evening, Edoardo Müller and Vincenzo Ramon Bisogni were appointed Honorary Members of the Renata Tebaldi Foundation.
